Garbage disposal reset: the red button under the unit
A lot of garbage disposal repair is not a rebuild. The overload trips, the unit goes silent or half-dead, and the fix is one press of the red reset on the bottom.
Where it is
Look under the disposal, near the center of the bottom plate. Most units have a small red (sometimes black) button that sits slightly proud of the housing. That is the thermal overload reset.
How to use it
- Kill the wall switch. Do not reset while the switch is on.
- Clear an obvious jam first if it hummed and stopped. Use a 1/4″ hex key from below — not your hand from above. See jammed.
- Press the red reset once until it clicks in. Do not mash it repeatedly.
- Cold water on, then the wall switch. If it runs, you just finished the repair.
Burnt smell, melted cord, or a hot housing: leave the breaker off. That is not a reset job. Get a plumber or an electrician.
If it pops again right away
The motor is still overloaded or dying. Free a jam with the hex key, then try reset once more. If it trips with an empty chamber and clean power, treat it as replace — not more garbage disposal repair at the sink.
