It’s dead. No hum, no grind.

The switch does nothing. That is power, or a dead motor. Silence is not a jam. A jam usually hums first.

Check power before you buy a unit

  1. Wall switch. Confirm it is on. A half-switched or dead switch is common.
  2. Breaker. Find the kitchen or disposal breaker and reset it once.
  3. Red reset. Press the button on the bottom of the unit. It pops after a jam or an overload.
  4. Cord or hardwire. If it has a plug, confirm it is seated. If it is hardwired and you smell burnt insulation, stop.

Those four are good and you still get silence: the motor is dead. Replace the unit. Do not keep stabbing the reset.
