Garbage disposal not grinding food: what to check

The unit runs and the plate turns, but scraps come back up or sit in the chamber. That is a different garbage disposal repair path than a locked plate (jammed), a buzz with no spin (humming), or a rattle or squeal (noise). Work the safe checks before you buy a new disposal.

Spinning but not shredding?

Safe checks (power off first)

  1. Kill the wall switch. If you go under the sink, kill the breaker too. Confirm the unit cannot start.
  2. Look for a soft jam or object. Shine a flashlight down the drain. Lift out pits, bones, bottle caps, or fibrous scraps with tongs. Never put your hand in the chamber.
  3. Free the plate with a 1/4″ hex key. Under the unit, put the key in the bottom socket and turn both ways until the plate moves freely. Full jam steps: jammed garbage disposal.
  4. Press the red reset on the bottom if it tripped while you cleared the chamber. See red reset button.
  5. Test with cold water and a small food load. If scraps still spin and come back up with an empty-feeling chamber, the lugs are likely worn.

Burnt smell, smoke, sparks, or a wet cord? Leave the breaker off. That is not DIY garbage disposal repair. Call a plumber or electrician.

Worn lugs vs a soft jam

Worn lugs are not a parts fix on most home units. Skip more DIY and use the repair vs replace call, then replacement options if the unit is done.
